There are Filipinos who “walk the talk” about innovation. Even better is that they’ve zeroed in on saving lives by working on improving healthcare.
Earlier this year, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) began to officially identify and recognize leading health market innovation (HMIs) players in the country in partnership with the Global Center for Health Market Innovation (CHMI). From initially whittling down a list to the most outstanding 20, they began the process of reviewing and analyzing each of the programs, which eventually culminated with an awarding ceremony that just happened recently.
In the Galing Likha Kalusugan Awards held November 9, the Community Health Information Tracking System (CHITS) bagged the “Best Health market Innovation Award” for it’s significant contribution to improving health care delivery in government health centers. With CHITS, health workers were able to cut-off delays in giving care to patients in health centers with timely data and reports that are often bogged down in using a paper-based system.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Portia Fernandez-Marcelo, Director of UP Manila Telehealth Center, emphasized the role of public health workers as the “real” champions in improving health care delivery through CHITS.

Well said, but if it means improving the lives of more Filipinos through healthcare, more “real” champions on innovation isn’t something we can get enough of — for every idea that gets to see daylight is a win we can all cherish and celebrate.
